Take a vacation. Seriously, know that a remodel could be more than you expected.
Find professionals you can trust and count on. A reliable and qualified architect and designer can make the difference between a mild Excedrin headache and a full blown migraine.
Be prepared for a mess. For example, working with drywall can produce lots of dust. If you are prepared for this minor inconvenience, it is more tolerable. Section off the room in plastic. Cover or put away computers, vcrs, tvs, etc…

EXPECT TO SPEND 10%-15% MORE THAN YOU ORIGINALLY BUDGETED. There are always unforeseen situations to deal with. For instance, you may find that the floor needs to be leveled before tiling, the drywall needs to be replaced due to water damage or a new header needs to be added above your new window. Or on a more aesthetic note, you could simply decide new carpet is necessary once the new wall color goes up. Again, better to be prepared.
Allow time to find and order what you really want. Be aware that anything from tile to carpet to furniture can take anywhere from two to eight weeks to receive. To eliminate frustration, build that time frame into your schedule at the start. If you are prepared for that, it will be a lot less annoying.
